Project Description

First critical edition of the charters of emperor Louis the Pious (+840) who was the last to reign over the entire Frankish Empire. During his reign a lot of developments on many fields grew up which turned out to be significant for the future. For these developments the royal charters are very important sources, and often mark the limits of historical interpretation. Being the last gap within the MGH series of royal charters up to the end of the 12th century, all diachronic studies were so far handicapped by the lack of this critical edition.
