The project is part of a general plan to digitize most of the imprints found in the VD 17 database, providing central access to them and making a substantial contribution to the complete digitization of German printed cultural heritage. The goal of the project is to contribute significantly to this joint programmatic effort to digitize VD17, one of the most important national bibliographical resources. It is projected to take approx. 10 years in all and will put another 7.000 imprints from this period online. In the three-year funding period covered by this application the HAB will digitize 1 Mio pages according to the standards of DFG Guidelines on Digitization Practice, also providing structural and bibliographical metadata. The digital copies will be able to be accessed via the VD17 database, the OPAC of the library, the GBV union catalogue and the so-called ZVDD. Persistent identifier and metadata of the digital copies will be delivered via an OAI interface within the Wolfenbüttel Digital Library (WDB), allowing other institutions such as the National Library (DDB) or the Europeana to harvest the data.Responding to recent recommendations of the DFG practice guidelines and the growing interest of researchers in making use of digital copies in their own research environments, e.g. to create fulltext by using OCR or to provide synoptic views on the material, since 1st March the library has made all its digital copies available under a Creative Commons licence.
