The focus of our joint investigations is the diagnostics of high energy density matter. A key quantity is the dynamical (optical) conductivity that is measured in the static case, but also in optical spectroscopy, reflectivity measurements, absorption and related phenomena, in addition to thermodynamic properties. It can be calculated via the dielectric function with modern quantum-statistical methods (Green's function techniques, response formalism, numerical simulations) by the applicants in Rostock. In Chernogolovka, the Russian partners provide a broad spectrum of experimental methods (chemical explosions in different geometries) to create and analyze strongly correlated plasmas by shock waves. In these experiments, they obtain the Hugoniot curve, as well as the electrical conductivity, Hall resistivity, optical spectra and reflectivity as a function of pressure and temperature. In connection with the proposed project, new shock wave experiments shall be carried out and interpreted with the help of theoretical models. The problem of the metal-insulator transition (plasma phase transition), the determination of the equation of state and diagnostics by spectral line shapes are firmly connected to the project. In the experiments, dense nobel gases (helium, argon and xenon) will be used as target materials.
