In Arabidopsis membrane traffic, specific coat proteins are recruited by ARF1 GTPase activated by different pathway-specific ARF-GEFs. Although ARF-GEF GNOM and its closely related paralogue GNL1 use the same domain interaction required for membrane association, only GNOM – but not GNL1 – mediates endosomal recycling. We will continue to analyse the structural basis for the functional specificity of GNOM, the mechanisms of its endosomal membrane association and the pathway-specific recruitment of coat protein complexes.
