The sub-project explores the exchanging of hostages as a form of treaty security that oscillated between moments of exceptionalism and routine. While the focus lay on inter-state conflicts during the CRC’s first two terms, it will be shifted onto situations of civil war in the third phase. Thus, the three working assignments deal with hostages and war contributions, hostage situations/hostage-taking in the French Wars of Religion between 1557 and 1629 and the 1799 “loi des ôtages” in revolutionary France.
