Final Report Abstract

In the course of our studies directed towards „Green and Sustainable Catalysts for Synthesis of Organic Building Blocks“ we have described a range of novel applications for iron(III)-catalyzed oxidations with air as terminal oxidant. Moreover, novel iron catalysts could be synthesized and applied to catalysis. The 2,2ʹ-bis(arylamino)-1,1ʹ-biaryls obtained by oxidative coupling of diarylamines were demonstrated to represent useful synthetic building blocks. The corresponding asymmetric iron-catalyzed oxidative biaryl coupling could be achieved in up to 96% ee. The iron-catalyzed Wacker-type oxidations has been further optimized and was successfully applied to the total synthesis of a range of biologically active natural products. The achieved results emphasize that increased search for novel iron catalysts leads to more environmentally benign reactions and finally to a sustainable chemistry.
