The aim of this joint research project is the development of a physicochemically based numerical model to evaluate ignition processes of combustible gases with respect to safety engineering. Therefore, different ignition sources in mixtures of different combustibles shall be examined experimentally and numerically. The participants of the research group are strongly focused on the clarification of the interaction of the various transport processes with chemical reactions during the different ignition processes. This multi scale problem comprises several time and length scales and different physical/chemical phenomena. Hence, a multidisciplinary approach that combines the experiences of various institutes is necessary to attain the above aim including all relevant ignition sources. Whereas the focus of first project period was on the development of physicochemical models for simple flow configurations, the focus of the second project period will be the extension of the experimental investigations and models to more complex flow environments, more complex combustibles and mixtures of combustible gases, auto-ignition at low temperatures, and hierarchical modeling concepts for ignition in turbulent flow-fields.
