This project investigates an innovative approach to produce and manipulate graphene nanostructures. Supported and suspended graphene will be irradiated with high energy ions, i.e. swift heavy ions with high kinetic energy and slow highly charged ions with high potential energy. Both projectile types induce ultra-intensive electronic excitations in graphene as well as in the support material. The extreme energy density is expected to result in structural changes on the nanometer scale which can be exploited to create defined graphene nanostructures. Graphene samples irradiated under various conditions will be analyzed in detail to optimize ion beam parameters with respect to potential applications.
