Following the assessment of Administrative Styles in the first phase of the research unit (2014-2017), the project plans to explore the impact of administrative styles on the performance of international organizations the second research period. In the first research period, our project developed a conceptual framework for assessing administrative styles empirically, and applied this framework to a total of eleven organizations in the policy areas of financial regulation, health, migration, security and water governance. In the second period (2017-2020), the aim of the proposed research project is to link these finding to the organizations performance in two critical areas of substantial respectively institutional policy-making: portfolio growth and organizational change. The second phase will follow primarily a quantitative design. Therefore the sample will be expanded to a total of 30 organizations and analyzed for portfolio changes and organizational reforms for a period of 25 years from 1990 to the present. For the measurement of organizational reforms, we will conduct a systematic review of a set of reform instruments over time (hierarchical restructuring, budgeting reforms, coordinative instruments, HRM). For the measurement of portfolio expansion, we rely on an instrument developed to measure portfolio expansion of national governments. This approach will provide insights in two important dimensions of organizational performance of international organizations and its determinants.
