Pascal Fries will investigate the patterns of rhythmic neuronal synchronization within and between brain areas during a serial visual search task. The monkeys’ behavioural performance will be related to the strength, phase and directedness of synchronization assessed with highly flexible, subdural grids and/or penetrating shaft electrodes that cover large parts of one cortical hemisphere, extending from frontal, motor, and parietal cortex up to occipital cortex. These flexible electrodes have been pioneered in the Fries lab and may turn out to be useful also for other members of the RU interested in inter-areal cortical interactions.
