Mesoscopic simulations of microfluidic applications

Subject Area Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics
Term from 2006 to 2012
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 23835962

Apparent slip in microchannels has been studied by various authors, but until today there is no consistent understanding of all the different experimental results. We are planning to perform very detailed large scale lattice Boltzmann simulations in order to study the influence of the wettability and roughness of the channel surface on the detected slip. We will simulate typical surface force apparatus experiments by introducing an oscillating sphere in the vicinity of the surface and study the influence of the wall properties on the detected boundary slip. We will also study the influence of the surface properties on structuring effects and flow properties of multi-particle systems with Brownian motion. Finally, our project will be extended to the investigation of flow of dense suspensions in hydrophobic and rough microchannels.
