Azaborinines are a little-studied family of compounds comprising isoelectronic benzene derivatives wherein two carbon atoms have been replaced by boron and nitrogen atoms. Given their geometric similarity to benzene, but slightly altered electronics, azaborinines are expected to find application in a number of fields, e.g. in pharmaceutical agents, functional materials, and diverse synthetic endeavours. Our 2012 discovery of a facile metal-catalysed synthesis of azaborinines led to the funding of a project based thereon.
