The aims of the project are to develop a regional model for dust-iron modelling and carry out high-resolution simulation over Australia and use the results as benchmark for global dust-iron budget estimates. Most of the planned research activities are completed. These include (1) Establishment of a surface dust-iron data base for the Australian continent and a methodology for similar work applicable to other continents; (2) Development of a module for dust-iron emission in the WRF (Weather Research and Forecast) model framework. It is now built in WRF and made available to other researchers; (3) Development of dust-iron transport modules in WRF, for example, a dust-iron wet deposition scheme which was missing in WRF but necessary for our study; (4) Establishment and testing of a dust-iron ensemble modelling procedure; (5) Process of ground-based dust-iron measurements obtained from the Australian DustWatch network.
