The accurate numerical simulation of 3D subsurface flow can be accelerated tremendously if the highest resolution is not used uniformly throughout the domain, but adaptively in regions that feature strong variability. We will extend the new parallel prototype code for adaptive mixed finite elements with a preconditioned nonlinear solve and for the time-dependent case. New parallel algorithms for parallel adaptive mesh refinement will then be coupled to the subsurface component of TerrSysMP ParFlow.
