Acute ischemic renal failure (ARF) significantly increases morbidity and mortality of hospitalized patients. The long-term prognosis of ARF critically depends on postischemic interstitial renal fibrosis. Newer data indicate that renal fibrosis partly results from mesenchymal transition of peritubular microvascular endothelial cells. Early and late Endothelial Outgrowth Cells, which both belong to the Endothelial Progenitor Cell population, have been shown to act vasoprotective under physiological and pathological conditions. Early EOCs protect mice from acute renal failure. Aim of the study is to analyze whether these cells can be employed for inhibiting postischemic renal fibrosis due to Endothelial-Mesenchymal transition.
