Optical waveguides and waveguide networks in 2D and 3D can be fabricated in various polymeric materials by locally inducing an increase in refractive index via femtosecond laser radiation. In this manner singlemode waveguides with losses below 0.5 dB/cm have been demonstrated. During the second project phase, first application-oriented networks of surface sensors will be assembled in close cooperation with the sensor-projects.
