The project aims at achieving single electron spin sensitivity and sub nm scale spatial resolution for a diamond spin based scanning magnetometer. To this end either custom made single crystalline diamond tips out of ultrapure diamond material of ultraclean diamond nanocrystals should be produced atomically precisely implanted and integrated into the existing AFM set-up. We intend for the first time to image single electron spins on surfaces. In addition, we will measure the magnetic field of single ferritin molecules and single spin labels on tobacco mosaic viruses. To get access to fast relaxing electrons spins we will extend our set up to low temperature operation and apply it to imaging metalloproteins. Our approach, once successful, has the potential to revolutionise magnetic field imaging in various areas of science, ranging from solid state physics to protein structure analysis.
