The Backbone Project aims at bringing out the full potential of the research group s collaborative approach. The research literature on collaborative learning and working underscores the value of such an explicit support for teamwork. A further source of inspiration for designing the Backbone Project s outline was the research group s own positive teamworking experience when defining its research agenda. Consequently, an important task of the Backbone Project will be to scaffold the ongoing interaction between the individual projects in order to ensure the best use of the existing expertise and to stimulate interdisciplinary cooperation. A further challenge will be to manage and assist the joint use of research equipment. However, the Project aspires to go beyond removing barriers to efficiency. Having created conditions for turning shared interest into joint products, the Backbone Project will, as a further step, document and integrate these products and communicate research ideas and outcomes to both scientific and lay audiences. The Project is conceived as an interface between the research group, affiliated groups like the Research Training Group of doctoral students, the relevant research communities and a wider audience.
