Development and model-based test of a SQUID-based high-resolution superconducting gravimeter (HR-1D-SG)

Common research goal of the cooperation is a SQUID based superconducting gravimeter with a higher resolution compared to state of the art instruments. The role allocation is as follows: PTB develops the sensor unit prototype especially the high precision test mass. IPHT Jena incorporates the SQUID readout circuitry, develops the SQUID sensors and adapts the SQUID electronics for the gravimeter. IGW will develop the geophysical models and tests the prototype sensor at the gravimeter facility in the Geodynamic Observatory Moxa (Thuringia). The main task of the project is the enhancement of the resolution compared to commercial acceleration sensors by a factor of 100 (resolution: 10-14 part of the Earth’s gravity), using highly sensitive low temperature superconductivity SQUID and an optimized readout circuitry. Potential of this type of sensor is to resolve very low geodynamic gravity signals to investigate the properties of the Chandler-Wobble and the Slichter-Triplet (if existent). To evaluate the resolution in comparison to the installed gravimeter high accuracy models of mass transports close to the observatory in Moxa have to be developed. If case of success of the prototype development a follow up project is necessary to develop a prototype of an instrument capable to measure gravity in three orthogonal directions, which is not possible for the current commercial instruments. This opens up a new world of data for the geophysical community.
