Regulation of meprin metalloproteases in inflammation and fibrosis (A09)

Subject Area Biochemistry
Term from 2012 to 2022
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 125440785

Project Description

The project analyzes the biology of meprin metalloproteases. Meprin β is required for mucin-2 cleavage, which drives intestinal mucus detachment and prevents bacterial overgrowth. In the next funding period, a mouse model that allows tissue specific overexpression of meprins will be studied in models of inflammatory bowel disease and the therapeutic application of recombinant meprins will be explored. The project suggests that meprins constitute key regulators of fibrotic and inflammatory disorders, and may be targets of therapeutic intervention.
