Computer assisted analysis and prediction of the haemodynamic outcome of treatment strategies in congenital heart diseases

The projects objective is to further develop image based modeling methods for improved in-silico testing of personalized therapy strategies in congenital heart disease (CHD). The focus of the project is computational fluid dynamics (CFD) supported by a lumped parameter modelling. Based on the models and methods developed in the first project phase we will extend our research towards clinical usability in order to make them usable in patient care. Computer modeling based on cardiac imaging has the potential to simulate the application of various treatment procedures in advance. Since therapeutic decisions according to current CHD guidelines are often solely based on pressure values or expert opinion, computer modeling has the potential for individualized therapy and predictive testing. The specific objectives of the project are the development of image based modelling methods for a) simulation (in-silico test) of treatment concepts of aortic coarctation and/or bicuspid aortic valves with stents or by valve replacement/repair, respectively, b) prognosis of hemodynamic changes after different treatment strategies using reduced order models (0D/1D) and c) predict changes of hemodynamic conditions at rest and during stress (pharmacological stress). The methods will be developed and validated with clinical real-life data.
