The topic of this proposed Research Unit contains many intimately related aspects that a single group will hardly be able to address. The investigation of embedded nanowires can only be carried out in depth by a close collaboration between both experimental and theoretical groups covering the various aspects of the proposed research. While all of the contributing groups have the necessary expertise for significant contributions to the proposed subjects, this expertise is delocalized over Germany, and requires formation of a well organized network between the different localizations. This additional effort is fully acceptable in view of obvious benefits of this coordinated initiative.
