The DFG Forschergruppe (FOR) 1644 CHARON links scientists from five universities and research institutes in Germany and Austria as well as collaborative partners in Germany, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Australia. The overarching aim of CHARON is to improve the assessment and quality of proxy data from (mainly marine) biogenic and abiogenic carbonate archives of Planet Earth. This includes research on parameters affecting abiogenic carbonate nucleation and growth as well as the aim to come up with a quantitative and process-oriented view on carbonate diagenetic pathways. During phase II, the central project (Zentralprojekt/Koordinationsprojekt = ZP0) of FOR 1644 CHARON at Bochum continues work with a dual logistical and scientific task. Logistical duties include coordinating the workflow within CHARON by providing core analytical facilities, sample material and experimental and field data, by organizing and coordinating meetings and workshops, by organizing and coordinating the central digital data archive, and by maintaining the webpage. ZP0 will continue to offer central analytical facilities to all involved partners. This infrastructure has been built and refined during phase I and requires maintenance and updating but significantly less input during phase II. Conversely, the scientific tasks resulting from joint hydrothermal alteration experiments (Graz, TP1 and Bochum, ZP0) request more scientific focus of ZP0. We respond to these issues by proposing a restructured scheme involving several projects. We also politely request an adapted funding for staff during phase II. It is proposed that, towards the end of phase II, selected papers of all involved partners are published in a special issue of a society Open Access journal.
