The overall objective of the project E2SO (Energy Efficient Management and Self-organized Operation in Sensor Networks) is to research wireless communication protocol options between the mobile nodes and to improve the reliability of the entire communication system while maintaining the already tight energy budget. All the investigations will be directly based on the research results from the first funding period in order to seamlessly integrate expected results into the developed system architecture. The dominating objective is still to provide efficient, i.e., energy and resource optimized communication in very dynamic heterogeneous sensor networks. The research goals of the second funding period can be categorized as follows. First, the communication among the mobile nodes needs to be designed keeping the energy budget and the hardware constraints into account. It is planned to further develop the wake-up system in order to exchange node IDs as well as complete encounter information. For this, the signal sent from the ground station and that from another mobile node must be distinguished. In the best way, the node ID can already be encoded in the wake-up signal. In order to achieve this, novel concepts for adaptive protocol management have to be developed. Secondly, the robustness and reliability of the entire communication system needs to be improved without increasing the energy consumption. One approach is to exploit the spatial diversity of the radio signals from the mobile nodes that are received by multiple ground stations simultaneously. The combination of these signals may substantially improve the communication reliability. The aim is to use the ground network as a distributed and dynamic multi antenna system that needs to be configured and maintained in a self-organizing manner. Finally, scalability and usability of the system is to be addressed, particularly for the other computer science projects as well as for supporting the dynamic adaptation of experiment parameters by the biologists. Novel concepts in protocol design will be researched to further extend the wake-up system to also communicate parameter changes (a few byte) to the mobile nodes even during the bat flight as well as to support complete software updates (a few kilobyte) at their home station. Coding algorithms are considered to provide the required robustness of the update procedure.
