Supply of organic matter to oxygen minimum zones (B09)

Subject Area Biochemistry
Term from 2012 to 2019
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 27542298

Project Description

This subproject will provide an improved mechanistic understanding of organic matter supply processes to oxygen minimum zones (OMZs), and quantify export fluxes of dissolved and particulate organic matter in the SFB 754 working areas off Peru and Mauritania. A combination of approaches will be applied, including biogeochemical analyses of seawater and of material from surface-tethered drifting sediment traps and Large Volume Pumps, radiotracer (234Th) studies, and high resolution chemical and hydrographical measurements obtained from gliders, moorings, and ships. Extrapolation of local flux estimates to the OMZ-scale will be supported by modelling.
