Final Report Abstract
In summary, we have used the model plant Arabidopsis to study root responses to hypoxia and identified several novel adaptations, primary root bending and lateral root development, that have evolved to cope with hypoxia. We were able to elucidate to some extend the molecular mechanism that drive these adaptations. The primary root bends via altered auxin distribution. LR development is controlled by ABA and both responses are balanced by the antagonistic activities of an ERF-independent hypoxia signaling pathway and by an ERFVII-dependent pathway. ERFVII-independent hypoxia signaling opens up a new field in hypoxia research.
