The objective of the current research project is to examine the interlinking of archive politics and the historical study of archival materials during the nineteenth century as a formative process for both, the change of archival institutions and the making of historical knowledge. In doing so, the project investigates an essential condition of modern historical research and examines comparatively the archival political conditions of research in in Bavaria and Prussia. Concomitantly, the study examines as to how researchers appropriated these very conditions and as to how they ultimately contributed to the institutional change of archives through their requests and demands.
