Health services research becomes more and more important since the number of health care problems continuously increases. Despite recent progress, German development of health services research is not yet in touch with international achievements. However, several funding initiatives such as the first-time promotion of a German Research Foundation junior research academy “Health Services Research” (2010) may successfully influence the future of this research area. The second junior research academy “Health Services Research” in February 2012 is supposed to give 20 participants the opportunity to present their projects and to discuss current issues as well as fundamental themes in study design. Following the course of five days, participants are expected to finalise their research proposals in order to apply for funding to the DFG. The concept will be based on the evaluation of the first junior research academy. Major changes comprise a reduction of lectures and an increase of group and plenary discussions of projects. Also, all applicants who will undergo the rigorous selection process will receive a detailed qualitative feedback. Young postgraduate researchers with different qualifications (e.g. medicine, psychology social sciences and other disciplines) will be able to apply for participation in the junior research academy if they have a doctor degree or their doctoral theses is at least submitted. Applications will have to address innovative research questions and to follow a rigorous methodology. We expect a wide range of research topics, study aims, theoretical models and methodological approaches.
