Electric and Magnetic Dipole Resonances in Heavy Nuclei: The Role of Deformation

Subject Area Nuclear and Elementary Particle Physics, Quantum Mechanics, Relativity, Fields
Term from 2011 to 2016
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 204313289

Recent experimental progress at the cyclotron of the RCNP Osaka, Japan, allows measurements ofintermediate-energy inelastic polarized proton scattering at and near 0° combined with high energyresolution. We plan to utilize this new experimental opportunity for an investigation of the nature ofelectromagnetic dipole modes in heavy nuclei at low energies currently at the heart of nuclearstructure research. Based on the results achieved in a benchmark experiment on 208Pb we plansystematic studies at different shell closures and of the role of deformation. The envisagedexperimental program ideally complements the research goals of the nuclear structure andastrophysics part of the Collaborative Research Centre 634 at the S-DALINAC accelerator at the TUDarmstadt using different experimental probes.
