Project Description

We consider finite element methods of coupled problems of transient incompressible fluid flow and transport. Different time discretisations will be used. Since flow and transport problems are generally convection-dominant, stabilised finite element discretisations in space will be applied. We will study theoretically and numerically the influence of different time integration schemes and different stabilisation techniques on accuracy and stability. Of particular interest is the interaction between time discretisation and spatial stabilisation. We will carry out numerical studies to obtain an insight how to choose the stabilisation parameters precisely.
