Controlled surface functionalization is one of the prerequisites to achieve function by switching. Towards this end we developed the so-called platform approach in the first two funding periods. Functional molecules/switches mounted upright on platforms form free standing, ordered monolayers on gold surfaces with controlled intermolecular distances. We now extend our method to quartz surfaces and surfaces with multiple vertical functions aiming at light harvesting adlayers, switchable fluorescence, and switchable redox catalytic properties.
