Active and reactive filtration of steel- and aluminum-melts during the dead mould casting of thin – and thick wall components (S03)

Subject Area Metallurgical, Thermal and Thermomechanical Treatment of Materials
Term from 2011 to 2023
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 169148856

Project Description

In service project S03, the planning, organization and execution of experimental casting tests are carried out for all foundry-relevant topics. New developed filter systems and filter materials are tested for their thermo-mechanical stability. The behavior of inoculants and grain refiners during the filtration of molten metals is considered as well as the possibility of introducing them via functionalized filter surfaces into the material. In cooperation with subprojects A07 and T03, the filtration of intentionally generated iron-containing intermetallic phases to reduce the iron content of secondary aluminum alloys is being investigated. Furthermore, the removal of hydrogen from aluminum melts by reactive filters is investigated in cooperation with subproject C06 on the basis of a pore-susceptible casting geometry.
