The subproject is focused on the development of thermodynamic databases related to modelling of the interaction of active and reactive Al2O3-based ceramic filter materials with steel and Al-alloy melt. The following directions will be considered: (1) further improvement of the thermodynamic description of Al-based metallic and oxide systems related to Al-melt filtration, (2) database development for the Al-Mg-Si-Fe-Mn/Cr system, oriented to the modelling of intermetallic compounds, (3) combination of thermodynamic data of the CaO-Al2O3 system with the descriptions of Ca-Al and Al-O-C systems, (4) database development for the Mg-Al-Fe-Mn-O-C system with particular emphasis on modelling the spinel phase and interaction with C, (5) use of an available Si-C-Al-O database to model the interaction of SiC and its protective SiO2 layer with liquid Al, (6) use of an available Al2O3-Fe-C database for the calculations of stable and metastable phase diagrams, (7) database development for the ZnO-Al2O3-Al/C system based on experimental investigations. The CALPHAD (CALculation of PHAse Diagrams) approach will be used for thermodynamic database development using key experiments.
