The a.r.t.e.s. Graduate School for the Humanities Cologne (AGSHC) is based on a concept of the humanities that goes beyond the dichotomy between the so-called cultural sciences and the humanities. The concept is based on the research focus areas and fields of excellence of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (faculty of the University of Cologne), one of the largest faculties of its kind in Europe. The scholars of this faculty feel connected by a common cognitive interest that is committed to inquiring into the conditions and possibilities of human knowledge, with a special emphasis on hermeneutical and historic-contextual models. Research topics comprise the genesis and invention of knowledge as well as processes of reception and transculturation and their anthropological and ethical conditions. By establishing a faculty-wide Graduate School under the umbrella of the university-wide Albertus Magnus Graduate School Cologne, the AGSHC will provide a common structure for all PhD students of the University of Cologne and bring together the existing expertise of all departments and disciplines of the faculty in order to improve and structure the interdisciplinary PhD programme. As an integrated Graduate School that comprises not only a PhD programme but also a Research Master programme and a research lab for postdocs, the AGSHC will meet the specific challenges of graduate education in the humanities. At the same time, it creates ideal conditions for operating a PhD programme in accordance with highest international standards. The introduction of the Research Master programme, which includes a fast track option is an integral part. The model of an integrated Graduate School can profit from the experience of both the a.r.t.e.s. Research School and a.r.t.e.s. international, which are to be developed further within the framework of the AGSHC. With the AGSHC, the faculty will realise its objective of becoming a graduate faculty capable of competing with the best national and international graduate schools and attracting both German and international PhD students. The AGSHC will serve as a platform for the internationalisation of graduate programmes with a special focus on equality standards.
