Educational and career-related goals of the Berlin School of Integrative Oncology (BSIO) are: (1) to enthuse pupils and undergraduate students for cancer research and a scientific career, (2) to educate basic scientists and (future) clinicians in a joint fashion in translational cancer research (with the goal that they "speak the same language"), (3) to point out the clinical presentation and the most urgent problems in oncology to basic scientists, (4) to enable clinicians to obtain a "Dr. rer. nat." (PhD) in order to create a common language between basic scientists and clinicians, (5) to provide programmes in doctoral education that match a candidates individual career profile, (6) to augment the international experience of graduate students during their PhD, (7) to offer a comprehensive supervision concept, (8) to ensure a "seamless" career programme ranging from undergraduate studies to the first independent position, (9) to facilitate the critical transition phases during early career development, (10) to re-attract the best BSIO graduates after they have completed their first postdoctoral position(s) at other institutions.Structural goals are: (1) to guide graduate students in a highly efficient fashion through their PhD project while following highest quality standards, (2) to facilitate studying and working at a multi-institutional metropolitan region, (3) to enlarge and to enhance existing structures in cancer research.
