Final Report Abstract

The myriad of applications for electronic systems have rendered the underlying semiconductor technology the most important driving force for innovation. We have become used to a steady flow of innovations with huge impacts on modern life and society. As the advancement of this technology however starts to approach boundaries, the Cluster of Excellence “Center for Advancing Electronics Dresden” (cfaed) targeted breakthroughs in promising technologies to complement the current predominant technology (CMOS). To achieve its goals, the cluster actively integrated discovery-driven natural sciences and innovation-driven engineering with its research approach covering all layers, from materials to large-scale heterogeneous information processing systems and vice versa. To maximize success and enable fruitful cross-fertilization, the cluster followed a “more-shots-on-goal” approach by pursuing multiple, interconnected “Research Paths” reflecting the distinguished research competence of cfaed and Technische Universität Dresden (TUD). cfaed’s investigators influenced electronics with high-impact results and placed new research fields on the map (e.g., reconfigurable electronics, 2D conjugated polymers, Tactile Internet). We learnt that a comprehensive approach, integrating research competency across layers from materials to systems, requires tailored strategies and instruments, which stay an important focus for cfaed as a Research Cluster of TUD. To realize its ambitious vision, cfaed successfully attracted and promoted high potential young researchers. We offered new career opportunities, introduced structured career reviews, attracted an above-average number of female PhD students, established a well-received Postgraduate Program with Grand Professor Mentoring and close cooperation with the TUD Graduate Academy. We attracted exceptional outstanding scientists as Strategic cfaed Professors for which we are very proud of. Most of our 13 Research Group Leaders developed into sought-after brains for international professor positions. Our graduated PhD students moved to attractive positions in industry and academia worldwide. cfaed acted from the beginning as Central Academic Unit and has developed into a worldwide recognized center for basic microelectronics research. cfaed established the Dresden Center for Nanoanalysis as technology platform for cfaed, TUD, and DRESDEN-concept partners. Housing the new groups in a new building with dedicated labs now fosters identification and interdisciplinary collaboration between cfaed groups and the neighbouring departments. By living the renowned Dresden Spirit, cfaed also essentially helped TUD to win the status as German Excellence University. The cluster was and is uniquely positioned in the largest microelectronics hub in Europe. Thus, it is of major strategic importance for the region, as highlighted by the engagement of local industry in cluster activities like career development, teaching and research projects.
