Project Details
Core Project 3 - Exploratories for large-scale and long-term functional biodiversity research: instrumentation and remote sensing
Subject Area
Ecology and Biodiversity of Plants and Ecosystems
Term
since 2011
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 193897623
Core 3 provides a comprehensive set of environmental information on all EPs and for the entire area of the three Exploratories. Core 3 will continue its services related to (i) the maintenance of the 300+148 climate stations and the extended set of experiments, (ii) the provision of remote sensing data (terrestrial, UAV, airborne, satellite), and (iii) the pre- and higher-level processing of those data sets into a vector of biodiversity relevant environmental indices. In addition, (iv) spatially explicit remote sensing-based datasets on land use will be generated and provided, and (v) the station network extended to the new forest plots, complemented by acoustical and photo recordings. (vi) A new data base will be implemented then, seizing the corresponding expertise in and coordinating with the botanical and zoological projects. (vii) The networked sensors together with meaningful indices derived from remote sensing data will be used to model below canopy abiotic plot heterogeneity on the forest plots and detailed succession structure in the gaps of the forest experiments. In grasslands we will provide geospatial products which characterize the landscape in the plot surrounding using state-of-the machine learning methods Core 3 continues to be strongly service oriented and provides essential components of the research infrastructure for the Exploratories.
