The research project is part of the field of cultural and media studies. It investigates a technical apparatus: the projection planetarium invented by Walther Bauersfeld at the Zeiss company in Jena in 1923/24 in order of Deutsches Museum in Munich. By examining the semantic attributions, the scientific applications, the literary and philosophical reflections and the artistic interventions around the planetarium since the 1920s it wants to describe the planetarium as a media installation and a cultural laboratory bringing together science, art and technology and translating the modern artificial attitude towards nature into condensed experiences.
