The research project aims at creating a catalogue raisonne of the furniture and furniture designs of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The project s main focus is on the systematic documentation and scientific analysis of the entire source material including original pieces of furniture as well as furniture produced in accordance with Mies van der Rohes original designs. This involves the art historical classification of individual objects as well as the compilation of their formal genealogy. The furnishing and interior design of Mies van der Rohe s buildings must be understood as an integral part of his architectural concept and is therefore crucial to a proper understanding of his work as such. Constructional as well as material requirements will be of particular interest, as is the attribution and dating of certain potentially authentic pieces of furniture. Finally, the participation of Mies van der Rohe s long time partner in the 1920ies and 1930ies, Lilly Reich, needs to be more precisely defined.
