Dissolution kinetics of innovative Materials during Electrochemical Machining

Subject Area Glass, Ceramics and Derived Composites
Term from 2010 to 2016
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 188726755

The interface kinetics during shaping of innovative sintered materials (Carbides with binder) by Electrochemical Machining at current densities around 100 A/cm² was investigated in the first project by electrochemical micro techniques in more than 30 systems. This included the interface structure (Metal/Oxide/Supersaturated Layer/Electrolyte), the composition and properties of oxides, their classification including oxidation numbers and the quantification of side products such as O2 and Cl2. The analysis of gaseous products in solution (O2, Cl2, CO or CO2) was hindered in some cases by interaction. Therefore, these products shall be quantified by specific commercial gas sensors (Fa. Drägerwerk AG & Co. KGaA, Lübeck), which requires the development of a suitable flow-through microcell and a modification of the data requisition electronics.
