To make open access publications available free of charge for users worldwide, authors often have to meet the costs associated with publication themselves. Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) wants to promote open access in the long term and has established in October 2010 an open access publishing fund to cover these costs as part of the Open Access Publishing programme run by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The funding for articles in qualtity-tested journals should be as simple and unbureaucratic as possible. The Open Access Officer for the Executive Board and the University Library of Erlangen-Nürnberg with its Open Access Service Center provide support for all scientists of the FAU.
