In this project we will establish a standardized pipeline for the creation of surfacebased brain atlases from a population of individual brains. The pipeline roughly comprises the following steps: imaging, segmentation, surface reconstruction, and averaging. The emphasis is on methods for creation, management, and visualization of brain atlases. The tools developed in recent years will be generalized and adapted in particular for hierarchical atlases. This will include also a concept for integration of functional data. Furthermore, we will utilize differential-geometry based methods for establishing shape correspondences in neuroanatomical morphologies and performing shape averaging with higher accuracy than current methods . Additionally we will develop methods for integrating partial data sets, in particular for registering partially-reconstructed neuropile regions in an atlas. The methods will be applied in close cooperation with the participating research groups and project Z to create atlases that cover different stages of development as well as different levels of detail.
