In our current four years joint project UWB in Medicine we were able to demonstrate the suitability of a carrierless impulse UWB radio for medical sensing applications and wireless sensor node communications in biomedical settings. We developed analog signal processing algorithms, state of the art UWB antennas and a highly flexible impulse UWB chipset for receive and transmit applications. There are still important open points which we want to address in this final 2-years period of UKoLos. This new project proposal UWB in Medicine 2 will now turn its attention to UWB systems which can eventually be placed inside of the human body. Two potential applications, specifically, will guide the research undertaken in the proposed project:• Communication with implants• Localization of interventional devices, such as cathetersSignificant challenges arise, which move beyond the investigations done so far. In the field of circuit design we will demonstrate a further increase in circuit integration with a novel monostatic UWB radar on a single chip. Further, diverging UWB standardization will be addressed using new tunability concepts for low power consumption pulse generators, which are essential for global acceptance of medical UWB, and for patient mobility. The ensemble of methods, circuits, and antennas will be validated in a test bed which addresses the topics of imaging of the body surface, localization and movement-tracking of interventional devices inside the human body, with millimeter-wave accuracy, in the presence of restricted bandwidth, low SNR, multipath propagation and interference.
