Quantification of the regional and temporal aerosol variability in the polar regions by combining independet ground-based, airborne, and satellite aerosol measurements including the development of new satellite retrieval procedures and the adaption of an data assimilation tool

Subject Area Atmospheric Science
Term from 2006 to 2011
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 17157989

The project intends to investigate regional and temporal distribution and characteristics of atmospheric aerosol in Arctic regions by remote sensing. Therefore remote sensing methods, developed for MERIS (BAER - Bremen AErosol Retrieval) and a dual-viewing approach for AATSR have to be adapted and tested to the specific arctic conditions: spherical atmosphere, high albedo by snow and ice and bi-directional snow reflectance. For Arctic experimental campaigns ASTAR-4 and ASTAR-5 the remote sensing tools will be used to obtain regional and temporal distribution of aerosol optical thickness and for validation of the retrieval results. Data assimilation for artic aerosol will be prepared and applied to fill regional gaps of the retrieval results and integrate them to a complete view of the aerosol properties of the campaigns above.
