Development of new Ti-based alloys for improvement of the anchoring and fracture healing of diseased bones ((01) M01)

Subject Area Biomaterials
Mechanical Properties of Metallic Materials and their Microstructural Origins
Term from 2010 to 2019
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 107540325

M1 focuses on new β-Ti-Nb-based implant alloys with low stiffness, high strength and bioactive surfaces, which contribute to improved fracture healing of systemically diseased bone. Cast alloys are thermomechanically treated for the preparation of semi-finished products with properties which are perfectly adapted for implants. Selective laser melting will be developed for the production of bulk and cellular Ti-Nb implants. Key aspect is the analysis of the effect of process-related materials states on the mechanical properties. The fatigue behaviour is investigated in dependence of microstructure, surface state, sample architecture and medium. Wear and fretting corrosion phenomena are evaluated. Strategies for chemical surface modifications will be further adapted.
