Final Report Abstract

This research project was successful in that it went according to the plan set out in the grant proposal, and has generated interesting new biological insight into the regulation of cellular translation. We studied the in vivo function of the protein DRP. We found that DRP is required for efficient translation of a subset of mRNAs specifically when cells are actively proliferating. We discovered the cis-acting regulatory elements in this class of mRNAs which impart DRP-dependency. We show that impaired translation of these mRNAs leads to the impaired cell proliferation observed in DRP mutant animals.
