Project Description

Sub-project C.5 investigates the ion and mass flux through nanopores as well as its modulation in the presence of ss- and ds-DNA. For this purpose, we conduct atomistic simulations and simulations on a mesoscopic scale, in which ions and DNA are represented as explicit particles and the surrounding water is implicitely accounted for by a grid-based hydrodynamic model and its dielectric permittivity. The obtained results are then compared with a continuum-based description. We seek to answer open questions regarding translocation rates, current modulations and rectification of ion and mass flux for asymmetric pores.
