The Z1 project constitutes the data center. It contains the German Internet Panel (GIP) and the Political Text Analysis Nextwork (PTAN). The GIP is Germany’s first probability-based online panel of the general population and includes both internet and non-internet households. It was first recruited in 2012, with a refresher sample in 2014. During Phase 3, the GIP will continue its existing longitudinal panel. Furthermore, in order to increase its sample size for the implementation of complex experiments and to investigate the cost-bias trade-off of recruiting via postal invitations instead of face-to-face interviews, the GIP will recruit a new experimental boost panel. The PTAN is a point of coordination for researchers in the project with the aim of supporting the use of automatic text analysis methods. The PTAN will try to promote text analysis methods that go beyond the simple bag-of-words model which currently dominates research on text analysis in the social sciences. We will address the use of document models that take into account the structure of the document and grammatical aspects and that are based on entities and relations rather than just words.
