In the second period of the priority programme the enormous developments and insights either in in situ analytics and synthesis techniques as well as of theoretical investigations of the primary steps of structure formation should be focused to develop an atomistic picture of the formation mechanism. A deep understanding of the mechanisms of formation of solids is essential for synthetically oriented working groups for the development of new synthesis approaches with the aim of controlling the structure forming steps towards metastable crystalline solids. A central concern of the priority programme is to group the expertises in synthetic chemistry of solids, the theoretical calculation and simulation and of the characterization with in situ techniques in Germany. Due to the diversity of scientific questions an interdisciplinary approach of qualified working groups is absolutely necessary. The working groups should form project clusters to focus the expertises of the different groups. The promotion of young scientists in a promising area of synthesis and characterization of new metastable crystalline solids is another major concern of the priority programme.
