The aim of this research project continuation is to further develop a novel, prefabricated, rollable, bitumen-free topping for roads. Originally the topping was designed as a three layer laminate based on films of a chemical reactive cement-in-polymer dispersion. For technical reasons this three-layer topping was changed to a single 10 mm thick layer, in which aggregates are embedded in the reactive cement-in-polymer dispersion. The prefabricated topping should be developed in such a way that it can be unrolled, fixed to the ground and be ready to use shortly after mounting. Furthermore, the topping should have a long lasting grip which is accomplished by embedding a mineral mixture in the cement-in-polymer dispersion. After adding water for the hydration and hardening reaction, the polymer should dissolve. The hardened cement should provide thus a strong matrix for the mineral aggregates with greater mechanical properties and durability than the bituminous asphalts. The continous hydration/crystallization o the cement clinker secures a selfhealing effect, since loosened minerals will be bound again to the matrix. Finally, the mineral mixture should provide the carpet topping with adequate water drainage and noise management to avoid aquaplaning and noise emission due to water excess on the road.
